Workplace violence in health care is increasing across the nation. Healthcare is now one of the nation’s most violent fields, as data shows healthcare workers suffer more nonfatal injuries from workplace violence than workers in any other profession. Maine is no exception. Over the last few years, healthcare workers have reported verbal abuse, broken bones, and other serious long-term or career-ending injuries. The physical, emotional, and psychological impact of workplace violence is just beginning to be understood.
Violence in hospitals is unacceptable. Hospitals need to be safe spaces for staff and patients. MHA has developed resources to assist member hospitals with mitigating workplace violence through advocacy, training, and education.
