MaineGeneral’s Nathan Howell named Chair of Maine Hospital Association Board of Directors

​The Maine Hospital Association (MHA) is pleased to announce that Nathan Howell, President and CEO of MaineGeneral Health, was installed as chair of the Maine Hospital Association Board of Directors on June 17 during MHA’s Summer Forum conference at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.

Howell, a Maine native, Colby College graduate and seasoned leader, has been President and CEO of MaineGeneral Health since 2023.  Prior to taking the helm at MaineGeneral, Howell served as President of MaineHealth’s Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford, a position he assumed in 2018.


“Nathan is a thoughtful and collaborative leader with a deep commitment to advancing healthcare in Maine,” said Jeffrey Austin, President of the Maine Hospital Association.  “His experience leading one of the state’s largest healthcare systems, combined with his dedication to improving access and quality of care, makes him exceptionally well-positioned to guide the MHA Board as hospitals continue to navigate significant workforce, financial, and policy challenges.”


Howell affirmed his commitment to Maine hospitals and MHA’s mission. “As Board Chair, I am committed to working alongside Maine’s hospitals to ensure they have the support, resources, and advocacy needed to thrive in an increasingly complex healthcare environment.  Guided by the Maine Hospital Association’s mission, I look forward to strengthening our collective voice and advancing policies that help hospitals improve the health and well-being of the patients and communities they serve.”


Howell succeeds outgoing Board Chair Chrissi Maguire, CEO of Mount Desert Island Health. Patrick Taylor, M.D., CEO of York Hospital, is the new chair-elect; Randy Clark, President of Northern Light C.A. Dean Hospital, Northern Light Mayo Hospital and Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital, is treasurer; and Trampas Hutches, Regional President, Mountain Region, MaineHealth, is secretary.

The at-large board members are Tiffany Comis, R.N., CEO of Redington-Fairview General Hospital; Britt Crewse, President of MaineHealth Maine Medical Center; Steve Diaz, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of MaineGeneral Health; Guy Hudson, M.D., CEO of Northern Light Health; Stephany Jacques, R.N., President of Bridgton Hospital and Rumford Hospital; Greg LaFrancois, President of St. Joseph Hospital; Denise Needham, Pharm.D., President of MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital and MaineHealth Waldo Hospital; Marie Vienneau, President of Northern Light Mercy Hospital; and Jeff Zewe, CEO of Houlton Regional Hospital and Northern Maine Medical Center.
